Hugh Hayes, who drew hundreds of fire prevention illustrations for the Oregon Dept. of Forestry during his 31-year career, died Tuesday at age 98. He was a draftsman for the department but had a cartoonist’s wit and a master illustrator’s talent. His fire prevention posters were distributed widely in Oregon in the years after World War II well into the 1970s. His pen remained active throughout his life, and he had a popular comic strip, “Rusty Scrapiron,” which ran in Wildland Firefighter magazine in the late 1990s.
Rest in peace, Hugh.
