RUCH, Ore. (August 10, 2026) – Firefighters have completed mop-up to 300 feet around the entire perimeter of the Woodrat Mountain Fire, with crews reaching as far as 400 feet into the burned area in some locations. Containment has increased to 60%, and the fire remains mapped at 282 acres.
Crews continue to systematically grid the fire, checking for remaining heat and ensuring nothing was missed that could lead to a rekindle. Hazardous snags are still being encountered, although significantly fewer are being found compared with earlier days of suppression.
A strong day-shift presence continues working across the incident, with crews gridding, extinguishing remaining heat and securing previously mopped areas. Resources assigned today include two 15-person suppression modules (SMODs), three falling modules (FMODs), eight 20-person hand crews, six Type 6 engines, five water tenders and two dozers. As progress continues, available resources can also be redirected to support new initial attack incidents as needed.
Tonight, three Type 6 engines are assigned to the fire, continuing mop-up operations and checking previously worked areas for remaining heat.
The Woodrat Mountain Fire was first reported just before 12:45 p.m. Thursday, August 6, as a vehicle fire that rapidly spread into surrounding wildland on Bureau of Land Management land along Woodrat Mountain Road near Ruch. ODF, Jacksonville Fire Department and Applegate Valley Fire District began an aggressive initial attack, with additional ground and aviation resources ordered as the fire grew. Hand crews, engines, dozers, helicopters and air tankers worked together throughout the incident to slow the fire, establish control lines and secure the perimeter.
The official cause of the Woodrat Mountain Fire remains under active investigation.
